What is theology?

At Mid-America, the study of theology is much more than an academic exercise in examining the great doctrines of the Bible. It goes much deeper, endeavoring to truly understand not just God’s Word, but God Himself. The focus is on gaining an intimate knowledge of God through His revealed Word.

Our approach is to view the Bible as the authoritative, all-sufficient, inerrant, and inspired Word of God. We accept it as absolute truth, so we strive to acquire a thorough knowledge of its precepts and principles so that we can better know God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit and understand how He wants us to respond and relate to Him. Mid-America’s theology degrees include a rigorous examination of the Old and New Testaments, systematically and practically exploring the rich truths contained therein and how these truths impact our worldview and inform our ministries.

How is a degree in theology applicable for today?

Centuries of biblical scholars have come before us, helping us better understand the God of the Bible and His magnificent truth. Yet the Bible is a living document, not dusty, dead doctrines, but as relevant for today’s world as it was when it was penned. At Mid-America, we leverage the scholarship of every age and then set it on fire to spread light and life in today’s cultures and for today’s issues.

At Mid-America, every faculty member has an earned doctorate and is a world-class scholar and ever-learning student of God’s Word. What further sets us apart, however, is that our dedication to His inerrant, all-sufficient Word doesn’t end with studying it. Every faculty member at Mid-America is committed to the local church. Most of our faculty have served as pastors or church staff members, so they have first-hand experience in how to shepherd a flock, preach the Word, and provide wise, knowledgeable administrative leadership. At Mid-America, we believe all theology is applied theology and all Scripture is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

Mid-America is a SACSCOC-accredited institution with a reputation for the highest quality theological training, whether you choose the two-year Master of Arts or go on to an advanced academic degree. The robust training you’ll receive will prepare you to engage the culture with a solid foundation of biblical theology and a compassionate heart for reaching the lost.

Meet Dr. mikey mewborn

Dr. Mewborn graduated from the University of South Florida and then attended Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, earning his MDIV in 2005 and his PhD in Practical Theology in 2014.

Dr. Mewborn has ministered at wonderful churches, including Davis Islands Baptist Church (Tampa, Florida), Bellevue Baptist Church (Cordova, Tennessee), and Collierville First Baptist Church (Collierville, Tennessee). In 2010, Dr. Mewborn was called to be the senior pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Collierville, Tennessee. He served EBC for nine fantastic years until his transition to Mid-America’s faculty.

In addition to leading our Theology department, Dr. Mikey Mewborn serves as Vice President of Student Life and Associate Dean of Mid-America College. He is married to his beautiful wife, Dr. Emily Mewborn. They are the proud parents of John “Wesley” Mewborn.
