Putting the ‘Service’ in Church Service
The Mid-America Pulpit Supply Program is an opportunity for Mid-America men, from associates to PhD, to serve local churches in the greater Memphis area through preaching. The program serves churches whose pastor is unable to preach as well as churches that are in between pastorates. The program also facilitates connecting a preacher to a preaching mentor. The program also offers a monthly preaching class called the School of the Prophets, which all men at Mid-America are invited to attend, both in-person or virtually. The name of the class, “School of the Prophets,” pays tribute not only to the group mentioned in 2 Kings 2 but also to the original name that Mid-America operated under for one year in 1972.
for students
The Pulpit Supply Program is your chance to get preaching experience as a student. You’ll have the opportunity to be sent out to nearby churches to open God’s Word and preach to God’s people. To apply for the program, contact Michael Gehringer at mgehringer@mabts.edu.
Once accepted, there are tWO requirements for you as a Pulpit Supply Preacher.
First, you’ll need to be ready and willing to preach. We’ll work around your schedule, and give you plenty of notice, but you’ll need to be willing to go out and preach as often as you can.
Second, you’ll need to have a preaching mentor, whom you’ll meet with somewhat often. Your preaching mentor will be someone you find who is currently active in preaching or has preaching experience. We encourage you to ask your pastor to do this, but if he’s unable, you can ask a professor who has preaching experience, a current or former evangelist, or a retired pastor. And if you don’t know someone who can fill this role, we’ll help you find one. Your preaching mentor will be responsible to meet with you before you preach, discuss your sermon, and pray with you, and then after you preach, meet again to debrief. From there, your preaching mentor will decide how often to meet and can require anything else he believes is necessary to make you a better preacher.
For Churches
Churches, the Mid-America Pulpit Supply Program has been created to connect you with young preachers who can come and preach your Sunday morning service, your Sunday night service, a revival meeting, or any other time where you need someone to come and open God’s Word. These preachers are carefully vetted, they are being educated in preaching, and they’ll come and love on your church with the Word of God. If you have a need for preacher, please contact Michael Gehringer by calling 901-751-3070 or emailing at mgehringer@mabts.edu.
